We’ve been not the most regular users of the radar for the past year in part because we’ve (thankfully!) not been caught out in any fog.
In the small amount of playing we’ve done over the past year with our radar we identified a few quirks…firstly that it didn’t have a heading sensor plugged in (or one that worked) and that we have no idea how much it draws out of the battery as somehow it was sneakily bypassing the amp meter. These quirks combined with the need for someone to be down below looking at the rather small, for nowadays, stand alone display meant that upgrading our radar was high on our first full winter refit list.

Getting the perfect height for the scan-strut support was a bit of a Heath Robinson job – we’d hoped the step ladder would do however it just wasn’t tall enough. Luckily the radar box from the new radar proved to be just the lift we needed.

After taking advantage of a very kind third pair of hands who happened to be passing, we got the new radar on and the aerial arch reattached (complete with new AIS GPS aerial and horn) and scan strut back up.
Most shiny all round…just a few days worth of running wires, making up new Cat 6 Ethernet connections and a fun with spiral wrap and it all turned on successfully 🙂
